This vriendfinder.com volume brings together contributions from a conference on the occasion of the seventieth birthday of Alexander 2007. The focus is on historiography in the transition from Late Antiquity to the Middle Ages. Despite the concerns raised in recent times there is continuity, in the opinion of the editor (p. 1-10) to an ‘era of change “(p. 2), so the question is to what extent the changes and upheavals of the authors contemporaries perceived the Middle Ages. The purpose of the review is to exceed the spatial, temporal, and species-specific from a wider perspective and consider Byzantine and Western medieval and late antique, historiographical and ecclesiastical sources side by side.
